Background of the Study
The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into education has revolutionized teaching and learning, particularly in STEM disciplines. In Lapai LGA, Niger State, ICT integration has emerged as a vital tool for enhancing instructional methods, facilitating interactive learning, and expanding access to digital resources. Modern ICT tools such as interactive whiteboards, educational software, and online platforms enable teachers to deliver complex STEM content in engaging and innovative ways (Ibrahim, 2023). These tools not only provide real-time feedback but also allow for virtual experiments and simulations that bring abstract STEM concepts to life. The use of ICT in classrooms has been linked to improved student motivation and higher academic achievement in STEM subjects, as learners can interact with digital content that caters to diverse learning styles (Adamu, 2023). However, the extent to which ICT is effectively integrated into STEM teaching in Lapai LGA remains under-explored. While some schools have successfully adopted digital tools to complement traditional teaching methods, others struggle due to infrastructural challenges, limited teacher training, and insufficient technical support. These disparities contribute to a digital divide that may exacerbate existing educational inequalities. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological advancement requires continuous adaptation of teaching practices and curricula, making ICT integration an ongoing challenge for educators. This study aims to evaluate the impact of ICT integration on STEM teaching and learning by examining its influence on instructional quality, student engagement, and academic performance. It will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with ICT adoption and assess how digital tools are transforming STEM education in Lapai LGA. The findings are expected to provide insights into the best practices for ICT integration and inform policy decisions that promote the effective use of technology in education (Musa, 2025).
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Despite the potential of ICT to enhance STEM education, many schools in Lapai LGA face significant challenges in its effective integration. Inadequate infrastructure, such as unstable electricity and poor internet connectivity, hinders the consistent use of digital tools in classrooms. Additionally, many educators lack the necessary training and technical skills to effectively incorporate ICT into their teaching practices, which limits the potential benefits of digital resources (Adamu, 2023). These challenges contribute to a situation where the promise of enhanced student engagement and improved academic performance in STEM subjects is not fully realized. Moreover, disparities in ICT access between well-funded urban schools and under-resourced rural schools exacerbate the digital divide, leading to uneven learning outcomes. Teachers often rely on traditional pedagogical methods due to a lack of ICT integration support, which further diminishes the quality of STEM instruction. The problem is compounded by limited funding for technology upgrades and the absence of standardized ICT policies that guide effective integration. This study seeks to investigate these challenges by assessing the current level of ICT adoption in STEM classrooms, exploring the obstacles faced by educators, and evaluating the impact of ICT on student performance. The goal is to identify actionable strategies to overcome these barriers and to promote a more uniform and effective integration of technology in STEM education (Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2025).
